Movie Review: Think Like a Man

Nothing is being reinvented in the romantic comedy “Think Like a Man,” the adaptation of Steve Harvey’s 2009 bestselling book, “Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man.”

Featuring a talented ensemble cast and several delightful cameos, there are many light, amusing and humorous moments in this film. But they’re often bogged down by the film’s narrative structure and some obnoxious characters.

The story revolves around a group of friends who play basketball every week as they discuss their romantic lives. Each of them is supposed to represent a “type” of guy in Harvey’s book: the non-committal guy (Jerry Ferrera, “Entourage”), the player (Romany Malco, “Baby Mama”), the mama’s boy (Terrence Jenkins, “Burlesque”) and the dreamer (Michael Ealy, “Underworld: Awakening”).

That basic concept makes the first half of the movie especially funny and amusing because the boys have no idea what’s going on. They are puzzled by an unanticipated change in behavior of the women and try to process the change in humorous ways.

The women begin asking questions about their past relationships and start redecorating their apartments, and the men do not know why. The comedy of the movie, however, is set up too much like a tired TV sitcom, only there isn’t a laugh track involved.

Most of the humor stems from the recently-divorced Cedric (Kevin Hart, “Death at a Funeral”), who serves as the narrator and the comic relief of the film. But as comic relief, Hart tends to be too manic — his unrestrained energy can be very exhausting at times.

This is most obvious in later scenes where the film tries to tie the four stories together; his unwarranted presence gets in the way of the central plot. The story itself has so many characters that the film never spends enough time to develop their backgrounds.

Among the four stories, Lauren (Taraji P. Henson, “The Karate Kid”) and Dominic (Ealy) have the most interesting relationship. Henson gives such a funny, brass and charismatic performance as a high-maintenance COO that contrasts nicely with Ealy’s more grounded performance that they are a

On the other hand, some characters in the film could have been dropped entirely because they do not serve any purpose but to provide some throwaway laughs. Bennett (Gary Owen, “LiTTLEMAN”), for instance, merely functions as the guy in the group who says blatantly offensive and stereotypical things

But for all the distasteful humor within the film, it treats its women exquisitely by making them more reasonable and more self-aware. When compared to the relatively childish antics of the men, the women in this movie are portrayed as intelligent and independent.

Oho Enthan Baby Movie Review:

Imagine a love child of Lover and Nilavukku En Mel Ennadi Kobam. That's Oho Enthan Baby.

The film's core — two individuals with a troubled past falling in love only to realise their nurture has given rise to flaws in their nature that may not be easy to overcome — is something that has the raw and edgy undertones of the former, but director

Krishnakumar Ramakumar's breezy-with-a-Gen Z-vibe treatment — opting for broad comedy rather than deeper emotions to explore the romantic misadventures of contemporary youngsters — reminds you of the latter. Its protagonist Ashwin (Rudra) is someone who, having only seen the constant

bickering of his parents (Vijayasarathi and Kasthuri), develops his idea of romance from the movies, especially Vaaranam Aayiram, and yearns to find his "Maalini". So, when he meets Meera (Mithila Palkar), she seems to check all the points in his checklist — he senses a spark between them right in
their first meeting, she discovers his strength (the filmmaker in him), initiates the first kiss, and also isn't eager to pick up fights with him. But the dysfunctional dynamics of his parents has also led to him developing certain toxic qualities. And Meera is dealing with a troubled family as well.

Naturally, there's friction at one stage in their relationship, which tears them apart... until film star Vishnu Vishal decides to play Cupid!Oho Enthan Baby's plot developments do make us say, 'Oh so familiar, baby' (a couple of cheeky past romantic episodes, a getaway to a beach destination, a

duplicitous ex-boyfriend, a redemption arc for an abusive character) and the resolutions it offers are too neat for characters who are flawed and scarred, but there is enough freshness in the filmmaking to keep us engaged and overlook the convenient writing (all it takes is one scene for characters to change their stance). But given that
Krishnakumar Ramakumar wants to keep his film clearly in the romcom zone, the comfort food genre of movies, we are able to look past the film's failings (like the not-so-organic manner in which a breakup happens). And the cast — the confident first-timers Rudra and Mithila Palkar, a self-referential Vishnu Vishal, a sporting Mysskin and a dependable Karunakaran — sells the romcom charm.

Kaththi Movie Review:
Kaththi opens with Kathiresan aka Kaththi being chased by prison guards and it is later revealed that he is in fact helping the cops track down an escaped convict. But Kaththi manages to give the slip to the police and comes to Chennai with the intention of flying to Bangkok with the help of his friend.

However, he drops the plan after he meets Ankita, who dupes him into believing that she wants to marry him, at the airport. Meanwhile, he chances upon a shootout and is stunned upon finding that the victim looks like him. He decides to impersonate the injured man and implicates him as the escaped convict.
But once he realizes what Jeevanadham stands for, he decides to complete his doppelganger’s mission — taking on Chirag, the owner of an MNC cola company who wants to take over the lands in Thannoothu, Jeeva’s village, which has an untapped water source.

A protagonist switching places and solving the problems faced by his look-alike is an age-old construct in our movies. Almost every major hero in Tamil cinema has done such a film — MGR had Nadodi Mannan, Enga Veetu Pillai, Rajinikanth had Pokkiri Raja, Kamal had Thoongathey Thambi
Thoongathey, Sathyaraj had Ulagam Piranthathu Enakkaga. Ajith had Attagasam and Suriya had Vel. Now, Vijay gets his own movie on this line. There are also echoes of Murugadoss’s earlier films — like Ramana, Kaththi reels out statistics, a professor who encourages the hero but works for the villain is straight out of 7aum Arivu, an emotional song closes the film as in
Thuppaki. But, unlike Thuppakki, the previous Murugadoss-Vijay effort, Kaththi is overlong, over-the-top, over-familiar, and overtly preachy. The problem is compounded by the fact that the film turns into a ‘message movie’ midway (Jeeva is made to define communism just to underline the film’s intentions)
and all we get is ‘city people bad, villagers good’ propaganda. In fact, in one scene, when a rich man calls the horde of people who have broken into his house to get the water from his swimming pool as ‘uneducated fools’, the director himself appears as a have-not to say (directly to the camera) ‘We’re poor but not uneducated’.
The water crisis is precipitated by Kaththi’s decision to stage a protest inside the pipelines that take water to the city after Chirag manages to outwit him in the court. Also, while we see the effort that has gone into the characterization of Kaththi (he even gets a needless origin story),
Jeeva is sketched poorly. He is neither wily nor brawny. We see that he is an idealist who cares for his people but that is all there is to the character. So, we hardly care about his fate.It is commendable that Murugadoss wants to

Oh Bhama Ayyo Rama is the latest Telugu movie starring Suhas and Maalavika Manoj (Tollywood debut) in the lead roles. The film hit the big screens today, and here’s our review on how it fares.

Story:
Ram (Suhas) hates movies to the core. One day, Satyabhama (Maalavika Manoj), a rich, yet simple and mischievous young woman, enters his life. Her presence brings unexpected changes in Ram’s world, and soon, the two fall in love. Just when everything seems to be going smoothly, Satyabhama places a strange condition before Ram, and he is left with no choice but to accept it.

Plus Points:
Maalavika Manoj does a decent job in her Telugu debut. She looks graceful on screen, and her expressions, especially in scenes with Suhas, are convincing.

Some of the comedic moments involving Sathvik and the heroine work out well in places. Suhas is just okay in his role. The rest of the cast members are passable and do what’s expected of them.

Minus Points:
The story itself becomes a major drawback. Though the basic plot carries potential, the weak and disengaging screenplay makes it hard to stay interested.

The emotional aspects fail to land effectively. While a few scenes might seem decent on their own, the long and tiresome journey leading up to them drains the viewer’s patience. Such is the lack of emotional payoff and pacing.

The film suffers from a predictable plotline, repetitive scenes, and lack of progression. The screenplay doesn’t offer enough high points to hold the viewer’s attention, and the slow narrative adds to the fatigue.

The first half is somewhat tolerable, but that’s only in hindsight after sitting through a stretched and meandering second half. Even with a familiar storyline, a film can still work if it’s supported by a well-balanced mix of romance,

Suhas’ potential feels wasted in this setup. His chemistry with the heroine, the bonding with his friends, and the flashback segments all feel underdeveloped and poorly executed.

Songs too fail to make a mark, and their placement in the narrative adds little value. Characters like Ali, Babloo Prithviraj, and others appear on screen but fail to leave an impression.

Technical Aspects:
Director Ramu Godhala fails to create an engaging film despite working with a plot that could have been turned into a decent romantic entertainer. The lack of freshness in narration and screenplay weakens the entire experience.

Manikandan’s cinematography is okay in parts. Music director Radhan’s work is neat, but the songs don’t really stand out. Editing by Bhavin M Shah is disappointing. The film feels long and loose, and even trimming 30 minutes might not have helped much. Production values are average overall.

Verdict:
On the whole, Oh Bhama Ayyo Rama is a painfully dull and entirely forgettable film. Despite Maalavika Manoj showing some promise in her debut and the occasional comedic moment landing mildly, the film is dragged down by a lifeless screenplay, shallow emotions, and dated storytelling. The narrative lacks energy, the writing feels lazy, and even Suhas appears miscast and unconvincing. The second half, in particular, turns into a tedious slog with no payoff. It is a tiresome, uninspired attempt at romance that fails on almost every level. Skip this one without a second thought.

Materialists Movies Review:

'Materialists' was not what I expected.
It's been marketed like a rom-com - but honestly? If you're heading in expecting laughs, you'll be disappointed. What you get instead is a sharp, quietly melancholic study on modern love, dating, and loneliness in the big city.

It's not so much about romance as it is about emotional bankruptcy - the way ambition, money, and appearances slowly chip away at real connection. The story follows Lucy, a matchmaker who views relationships like transactions, caught between two opposites:

Harry, rich and polished, and John, her sweet but struggling ex. But the real tension isn't between them - it's in her. What does she actually want? Love, comfort, validation? Or just a life that looks good on paper?

Celine Song's style is unmistakable - lingering shots, dialogue that feels like internal monologue, and a quiet ache humming underneath it all. At times, it almost felt like watching a late-era Woody Allen film - not in tone, but in that subtle, creeping sense of urban melancholy. By the end, I didn't feel uplifted. I felt... thoughtful. A bit heavy, even.

This is a film about the emotional numbness that sneaks in when we live our lives through filters - digital and otherwise. About the loneliness hiding behind perfect apartments and curated dating profiles. And how love (or at least the idea of it) gets commodified without us even noticing.

Not a rom-com. Not really even a romance. More of a character study. A mood piece. A quiet critique. And once I let go of what I thought it was meant to be, I found I really liked it, and I hope you do too.

3BHK Movie Review:

What happens when a middle-class family's to-do list becomes a movie? You get 3 BHK, a well-intentioned saga that feels like watching wallpaper fade on apartment walls you'll never own.Sri Ganesh chronicles the Vasudevan (Sarathkumar) family's Sisyphean quest for homeownership across two decades.

Every time dad Vasu and his clan scrape together enough cash for their 3 BHK dreams, life throws a curveball. Capitation fees for underperforming son Prabhu (Siddharth). Daughter Aarthi's (a sublime Meetha) marriage. Medical bills.

The cycle repeats with clockwork precision. There's undeniable warmth in watching this family stumble through familiar territory. Prabhu's reluctant transformation from IT drudge to someone who finally chases his mechanical engineering dreams rings true.

Seriously, Siddharth doesn't age! He's believable as both a schoolboy and a grown-up. Sarathkumar brings genuine pathos to the perpetually worried patriarch. Devayani who plays Sarathkumar's wife Shanti, is adequate. But familiarity breeds tedium here.

The beats arrive exactly when expected: the well-meaning father who makes questionable decisions, the son who rediscovers his true calling after years of mediocrity, the sacrificial daughter whose potential gets sidelined. Yogi Babu's brief role as a broker offers a couple of amusing moments. At 140 minutes, the film tests patience without offering much beyond recognition.

Yes, the struggles will ring a bell. Yes, you'll appreciate the absence of manufactured drama. But recognition isn't the same as engagement. 3 BHK constructs its narrative like its titular apartment: functional, predictable, and standard.

Mortal Engines Movies Review:

I enjoyed this movie mostly for the novel concept. Something really upsetting has happened to the Earth, there is some mention of a 60-minute war, perhaps nuclear. Now, at least 1000 years into the future, or as one character says, 1700 years after the big destruction,

cities large and small are on very, very large traction devices, they travel the landscape and gobble up smaller cities for the food and supplies. The featured city is London with its many levels, the lowest for grunt work and the highest for the elite.

So the hook here isn't unlike many other fantasy movies, there is always one powerful man who wants to be all-powerful. And there are one or two ordinary people who need to stop him. Here it is a female and a male, 30-ish young adults.

The movie is loaded with action, especially the last third or so. It is entertaining as a futuristic action flick, I suppose one could draw parables about the human condition and caring for each other. I watched it on BluRay from my public library, my wife skipped.

The disc has a number of very interesting extras showing how they built the sets and made certain parts of the movie.
